Here are 6 “steps” (no pun intended) to walking yourself fit. Did you know that in a half hour you can burn 150 calories? Use these tips to maximize the health benefit of walking.

  • Bend your arm about 90 degrees and swing them as you increase your walking speed
  • Quicker, smaller steps will take you farther and be less stressful on your muscles
  • Hit the ground with your heels and pull the ground with the balls of your feet and your toes
  • Watch your posture stay lifted
  • Monitor your breathing: breath deeply, slowly and consciously and extend the out breath
  • Use only the muscles you have to, relax your face and your back
  • Use the time walking to think happy thoughts
  • When walking up hill, take smaller strides, and push the hill behind you as you advance
